TipsEdit

There is a relatively easy way to open chests at any difficulty, even with low skill in lockpicking.

Move the lockpick all the way to one side, in a complete horizontal position, and start opening the lock. Then repeat with the lockpick horizontal but on the other side of the lock.

What you are looking for as you do this is how far the top slider bar has traveled when the pick starts to shake (or, at higher difficulties, simply snaps). This timing will tell you how close you are to the lock's "sweet spot." For instance, if the pick shakes or snaps immediately on your first try, you are as far from the sweet spot as possible; the second will likely open the lock. If both left-horizontal and right-horizontal attitudes fail, pay attention to when they do: if they do at the same time, aim the lockpick straight upt he middle. If both trials fail but at different times, then the correct angle is a diagonal; whichever trial took longer to fail is the side that's closer to the right angle (and vice versa).

Lastly, note that at higher lock difficulties, the slider bar will sometimes slow down as it approaches the end. This only happens if you have the angle wrong. Let go, adjust and try again.

Using this method, it is possible to open any lock with maximum of 2 broken lockpicks. Expect to waste a few more until your luck and judgment start kicking in, though.

Like dispelling or looking in someone's pockets, lockpicking is not a considered crime, as long as you don't take anything. This is usefull for checking whether or not it's worth sneaking up to it.


BugsEdit

Though the force chance may say 100%, there appears to be a very slight chance of lock picks simply breaking on a force. The odds appear to be low enough that you may not encounter this bug on a play-though, but it has been reported multiple times at different levels.

Forcing locks, even if successful on the first attempt, will still consume a lock pick, so if you're running low on lockpicks it is best to just manually open easier locks.
